How does the Motability scheme work?

The Motability Scheme has been designed to make motoring easy for you and your familiy. It offers disabled people who recieve either the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (currently £49.85 a week) or the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (currently £55.65 a week), the chance to exchange their allowance for a brand new car. Your allowance will go directly to Motability, in exchange for your new vehicle.

There are two ways in which Motability can turn your mobility allowance into the car for your needs:

  • Motability Contract Hire - A new car on a three-year contract hire lease

  • Motability Hire Purchase - A new or used car on hire purchase, over a term of two to five years

Motability Contract Hire is the most popular option for Motability customers, you can lease a car from them and use it as your own. Motability will take care of everything so you can simply enjoy worry-free mobility. Along with providing your vehicle and the support you need, Motability will also provide;

  • Insurance from RSA Motability (RSAM)
  • Breakdown assistance
  • Servicing, maintenance and repairs
  • Adaptations, many at no extra cost
  • A new car, scooter or powered wheelchair every three years
